“Chaïré” pewter tea box in the shape of a persimmon fruit made by Seikadô in Kyoto. The persimmon fruit is considered an auspicious food, based on the word “persimmon,” which means “joy to come.” So, many sweets and incense boxes have been made to look like persimmons since ancient times. The Seikado house, founded in Kyoto in 1838 during the Edo period, is today the only workshop specializing in pewter crafts in Japan. Although in the past, Kyoto pewter craftsmanship was only accessible to the upper classes, Seikado has done everything to create objects that are both respectful of tradition and anchored in modernity.
