This bowl matcha This piece is the work of ceramicist Nakamura Ryōji, born in 1955 in Higashiyama, a historic district of Kyoto. Coming from a line of potters, he is the younger brother of master Nakamura Shūhō, a renowned figure in Kiyomizu-yaki.

After graduating from the Kyoto Higher School of Ceramics (Kyoto-fu Tōkō Kōtō Gijutsu Senmon Gakkō), where he studied modeling and research, Nakamura Ryōji trained under three masters: Inoue Shunhō, Nakamura Suiran, and Nakamura Shūhō. He has since dedicated himself to the production of Kiyomizu-yaki (Kyō-yaki), the iconic ceramics of Kyoto, known for their delicate forms, rich decoration, and harmonious colors.

His work demonstrates a deep respect for tradition while revealing a personal sensitivity — that of a potter attached to the beauty of everyday life and the silent poetry of the seasons.

This matcha bowl was created by Nakamura Ryōji, born in 1955 in Higashiyama, the historic heart of Kyoto. He is the younger brother of Nakamura Shūhō, one of the distinguished masters of Kiyomizu-yaki.

After completing both the modeling and research courses at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Technical Institute, Nakamura trained under Inoue Shunhō, Nakamura Suiran, and Nakamura Shūhō, refining his craft within the Kyoto ceramic tradition.

Specializing in Kiyomizu-yaki (Kyō-yaki) — the refined pottery of Kyoto — his work is known for its delicate shapes, subtle glazes, and seasonal motifs. Balancing technical precision and quiet lyricism, Nakamura Ryōji continues to embody the timeless aesthetic of Kyoto’s tea ceramics.
