Porcelain cup made in Arita, Saga Prefecture.

Arita porcelain, or Arita-yaki, is a renowned type of Japanese porcelain originating from Saga Prefecture. It is distinguished by its fine, white appearance, made from kaolin-rich clay, which gives it a smooth texture, translucency, and great durability. Prized for its lightness, elegance, and glossy, glass-like glaze, Arita porcelain is ideal for the art of tea ceremony. Many pieces are still handcrafted using traditional techniques, perpetuating centuries-old craftsmanship while evolving with contemporary trends.

At the end of the 16th century, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the invasion of Korea, the Nabeshima clan, part of the troops sent, brought Korean artisans with them. They later arrived in Arita at the beginning of the 17th century and discovered a deposit of kaolin stone, an essential raw material for porcelain production. Arita thus became the first center of porcelain production in Japan. For over 400 years, the region has maintained this tradition, primarily producing tableware and decorative arts.
