Matcha bowl / "Tawara" Hagi-yaki
Hagi-yaki matcha bowl in the shape of a traditional rice container made by Zuiho Oono (1910-) in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The “tawara” (rice container made of woven straw) filled with rice, the staple food of the Japanese people, is a symbol of wealth. It is given meanings such as “good harvest” and “prosperous business”.
Oono Zuiho was born in 1910 in Kyoto, a city with a strong culture of ceramics and other art forms. After learning many skills in Kyoto, Ono Zuiho built a kiln in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and began producing his own Hagi-yaki pottery at the age of 37. He left behind many works as a ceramic artist.
