This Hagi-yaki matcha bowl, shaped like a traditional rice container, was crafted by Zuiho Oono (born 1910) in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The tawara, a woven straw rice container, symbolizes abundance and prosperity in Japan, representing wishes for a good harvest and successful business.
Born in Kyoto, a city renowned for its deep-rooted ceramic traditions, Zuiho Oono mastered various pottery techniques before establishing his own kiln in Nagato at the age of 37. He went on to create numerous works as a respected Hagi-yaki ceramic artist, leaving behind a significant artistic legacy.
