Matcha box in black lacquered wood "Wajima-nuri" with pine pattern and makié crane made by Ichiryô Sakurai, master lacquerer in Wajima, in Ishikawa prefecture. The crane has long been used in various motifs as a bird of longevity. She is also a symbol of marital harmony, as cranes get along well and stay together throughout their lives. The pine is a symbol of longevity because it always remains green and can live up to a thousand years. Considered a tree in which the gods dwell, it is still used in ceremonial rites. The motif combining pine trees and cranes is associated with the couple's wish for long life and longevity.
