Kuro-Oribe is a type of ceramic found in the Oribe category, which represents Momoyama-period ceramics among Mino pottery. Objects such as tea bowls and tea caddies were produced, and many high-quality bowls have been preserved. After firing, the pieces were rapidly cooled upon removal from the kiln, causing the iron-based glaze to develop a jet-black color, resulting in a black-glazed ceramic. Pieces that are simply deformed or shaped into a hoof-like form with a black glaze are called Oribe Kuro. Those that, like the piece shown here, are decorated with patterns are called Kuro-Oribe to distinguish them (Kuro means black in Japanese).
