This red raku bowl was created by Yoshimizu Sôhaku, formerly a master at the Omotesenke school. Raku, a Japanese ceramic technique, is distinguished by red bowls fired at a lower temperature (around 800°C) and black bowls fired at a higher temperature (around 1000°C). A unique characteristic of raku is that the bowl is removed from the still-hot kiln with special tongs and rapidly cooled in water, often leaving distinctive marks. This method gives raku pieces a unique and refined aesthetic.
